The RNC (Republican National Committee) has elected a new leader today in Michael Steele, the first black man to hold the position. One might wonder if Steele had won this position had Obama not won the presidency, but personally I think this is a good thing. I became a fan of Steele when he ran and lost the Senate race in 2006. He is considered a moderate by many, but I’ve rarely heard something from mouth that I didn’t agree with.
Steele’s Senate race in 2006 was plagued with accusations of being a race traitor, and this will likely continue with his new position. On the other side, Steele’s main opposition for the RNC position had once belonged to a white’s only club. /facepalm. To me his election doesn’t show how far we’ve come but how far we have to go. And that the burden of racial reconciliation does not rest of the shoulders of whites alone, but of every race.
But anyway, hopefully Steele can do some good in the position. I look forward to hearing his ideas.
